3.9 CPU

Aryan: You have discussed about all the devices, but still I don’t know
about this device to which keyboard, mouse, monitor are connected.
                                 What is this?

Gowri:This black box is CPU. We have discussed a little about this
in the previous chapter, now I will tell you in detail. It is the part of
computer which controls all the other parts of computer

                                                                      Central Processing Unit
                                                                       Arithmetic Logic Unit
                                                  Input Devices Output Devices
                                                                          Control Unit

                                                                          Memory Unit

CPU is further divided into three parts

CU (Control Unit) MU (Memory Unit) ALU (Arithmetic Logical Unit)
It controls the processing It is used to store data. It handles both arithmetic and
                              of computer. logical operations.

                 3.10 UPS

Aryan: What is the other device which we switch on before CPU?
                     Gowri: This is called UPS.

It’s full form is Uninterruptible Power Supply. It provides battery
backup when the electrical power fails for some time.
                                                                                                      Fig. 3.15
Let us revise what we have learnt:

The Desktop is the first screen seen after turning on the computer.
Peripherals are devices connected to the computers.

Input devices include the keyboard mouse, and touchscreen.
Output devices include the monitor, printer, and speakers.

The Start button and taskbar provide access to programs, settings, and
                      shutdown options.

                                                               Desktop and Computer Peripherals 33
