7.2 HOW TO PROTECT YOUR SYSTEM

Aryan: Then, how can we protect our system?

Gowri: There are different ways to protect our system:
Keep The Operating System up to date.

Use a Firewall.

Install Antivirus Software: Antivirus software is crucial for preventing virus attacks,
but this strategy only works if users keep their software up to date.
Use the latest version of your web browser.

Don’t fall for Phishing emails: Emails that appear to be from a recognisable online service,
asking you to log into a site to confirm personal details, are almost always fake.

Create backup of all of your data.
Always set a password on your system so that no unauthorised person can use it in your
absence.

Aryan: Why computer viruses are called viruses?
Gowri: Computer viruses are called viruses because they share some of the
traits of biological viruses. A computer virus spreads from one computer to
computer just like a biological virus passes from person to person. Similar to
the way a biological virus needs a cell to ride, a computer virus must require a
program or document to launch. And once computer virus starts running, it can
infect other programs or documents as well.

7.3 ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE AND EXAMPLES
Aryan: OK, What is Antivirus Software?

Gowri: An Antivirus Software is a program or set of programs that are
designed to prevent, search for, detect, and remove software viruses, and other
malicious software like worms, trojans, adware, and more.
Examples of Antivirus software are Norton Antivirus Plus, Avira Antivirus,
Kaspersky, Quick Heal etc.

7.4 FIREWALL AND ITS USE

Aryan: Now Please tell me something about Firewall.
Gowri: A Firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorised access to
or from a private network. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass
through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not
meet specified security criteria.

Aryan: Is it a hardware device?
Gowri: Firewalls can be either hardware or software, but the ideal firewall configuration consists
of both.
