An Excel file is called a workbook. It consists of many worksheets. By default, the file name of a new
workbook is Book1. A new workbook has only 1 worksheet having name Sheet1.
EXPLORING THE EXCEL INTERFACE
The Excel interface is the screen you see when you open Excel. At the top, there is a Ribbon, which
has tabs like Home, Insert, and Page Layout. Each tab contains different tools you can use. Below the
Ribbon is the Formula Bar, where you can see or type data into a selected cell. The main area is called
the Worksheet, where you can enter your data in cells arranged in rows (numbered) and columns
(labelled with letters). At the bottom, you will see Sheet Tabs to switch between different sheets in
your workbook. The Status Bar at the bottom gives information about your work, like the sum of
selected numbers.
