Sheet Tab: It shows the worksheets in a workbook and the Active Sheet.
Worksheet: It is a grid of Rows and Columns. The rows are numbered as 1, 2, 3, 4…. as indicated
by the Row Headers. The columns are labelled alphabetically as A, B, C, D…Z, AA….AZ,…..XFD as
indicated by the Column Headers. The total number of columns in Excel is 16,384. The total number
of rows is 1,048,576.
Rows and Columns: Columns are the vertical sections of the table whereas Rows are the horizontal
sections of the table.
Cell: The intersection of rows and columns is known as cell. It is the smallest unit in a worksheet and
can hold numbers, text or formula.
Active Cell: It is the cell that is currently selected. It can be recognised by its green outline. You can
type data into an active cell only.
Formula Bar: It displays the contents of the active cell. You can also type or edit data and formulas
in the formula bar.
Name Box: It displays address of the active cell. It is present on the left side of the formula bar.
Creating Your First Spreadsheet
To create your first spreadsheet, enter data into the worksheet by clicking on the cell where you want
to type. Then, start entering your text or numbers.
When you begin typing in Excel, two buttons become active in the box to the left of the Formula Bar —
the Enter and Cancel buttons.
