SYSTEM SOFTWARE

System software is a set of programs that control the overall functioning of a
computer. They are designed to operate, control and run a computer’s hardware
and application programs.

When we switch on a computer, the system software prepares the computer for you
to work on it. It loads important files so that you can work and run the application

software. The operating system is an example of system software. Without an
operating system, a computer cannot function. It acts as a manager between
the computer hardware and the user.
Microsoft Windows is the most popular
operating system available today. It

has different versions like Windows
98, Windows 2000, Windows XP,
Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows
8, Windows 10 and Windows 11.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE

At home, you might have seen various appliances which perform only a specific
task. For example, a washing machine is used to wash clothes and a microwave is
used to cook food.

Similarly, computers also have some software that perform only certain tasks.
These types of software are known as application software. For example, WordPad
is used for typing a document but we cannot do painting in the WordPad program.

Some more examples of application software are:

Paint is used for drawing and colouring pictures.

Writer is used for typing letters and essays.

Calculator is used to do mathematical operations.

Impress is used for creating presentations.
