As you know, a computer requires an operating system to work. Without it, we cannot
start a computer and work on it. An operating system is a system software that
controls all the activities of computer and provides an easy interface to the computer.

In this chapter, we will learn about Windows 10 operating system. Some other
operating systems are Linux, Unix, Mac OS X and MS DOS.

WINDOWS 10

Windows 10 is the most popular operating system launched by Microsoft. It has
a Graphical User Interface (GUI) which allows users to interact with computers
through buttons, icons or dialog boxes. Windows 11 is the latest operating system

launched in 2021.

Some features of Windows 10 are:

It is a user-friendly operating system.
It has a GUI which means you do not need to remember all the commands.

It has a new style of Start Menu: everything is arranged under different tiles.
It allows us to run several programs at the same time.

It allows us to create multiple desktops.

STARTING WINDOWS

When we switch on the computer,
Windows operating system is loaded
into the computer’s memory. The

process of loading the operating
system after the computer is switched
on is known as booting. During booting,
the computer performs necessary
actions which makes it ready to use.
After booting, a screen appears which
is known as the login screen.

After some time the screen appears, which is called the desktop. Let’s learn about
