We have already learnt that Internet is a vast computer network that links other smaller
computer networks worldwide. It has various uses. In this chapter, we will learn about the
popular use of the Internet, i.e., E-mail.

                            WHAT IS E-MAIL?

E-mail stands for electronic mail. It is used to send messages to multiple people, sitting at
different geographical locations, within a few seconds. It is a fast and convenient way of
correspondence. We can also send or receive pictures, audios and videos with an E-mail.
                  They are called attachments.

                  ADVANTAGES OF AN E-MAIL

E-mails have various advantages, some of which are:

An e-mail can be sent anytime and from anywhere in the world.
An e-mail can be sent to many people at a time.

An e-mail can be easily forwarded to anyone without typing it again.

Sending an e-mail is fast in comparison to traditional mail.
Music, images or any other computer file can be shared with anyone by using e-mail.

If an e-mail does not reach its destination in the first attempt, the mail server automatically
                    sends it again.

If an e-mail is not delivered, you receive an e-mail explaining why the e-mail could not
                    be delivered.

                                                                                Free email service providers
                            E-MAIL ADDRESS

To use e-mail services, we need to create an e-mail account. We can send and receive
messages from an e-mail account. Some of the most popular websites that provide the
facility to create free e-mail accounts.

                     www.gmail.com www.rediffmail.com www.yahoo.com www.outlook.com

There is a specific format for e-mail addresses that includes a username and domain name
which is separated by @ (pronounced as ‘at’). The username is different for every e-mail
but the domain name remains the same for all the people using the same mail server.

                  For example:
                                                                               Domain name
                                                           xyz@gmail.com
