AUTOFILL

Sometimes, while entering a large amount of data, we find that we are entering sequential
data in our worksheet which proves to be monotonous and time-consuming. Excel,
however, has an excellent feature that provides the feature to add duplicate entries or
to fill a series of data easily using the fill handle. The feature of entering sequential data
in the cells of a worksheet is called AutoFill. This feature allows us to quickly fill cells with
repetitive or sequential data. Data can be filled down in a column or across a row.

WHAT IS FILL HANDLE?

When a cell is selected in a worksheet, a solid square called the Fill handle appears at the
bottom-right corner of the cell. When we position our mouse pointer at the corner of the
Fill handle, the shape of the mouse pointer changes to a Black cross icon. This black cross
icon is used to fill cells with repetitive or sequential data.

FILLING A NUMBER SERIES

Let’s say we want to enter numbers in a sequence from 1 to 5 using the Fill handle.

For filling data in a sequence from 1 to 5, follow the given steps:

1 Select the cell and the
numbers 1 and 2 in the first
two cells (A2 and A3).

3 Release the
mouse button.

2 Select both the cells and drag
the Fill Handle down to cover the
number of cells to be filled.

The sequence will be completed automatically.
