SPOTTING FAKE NEWS IN THE DIGITAL ERA
It’s a digital world and learning to spot fake news is like
learning to look both ways before crossing the street. It’s
an essential skill for being a good digital citizen. A digital
citizen is someone who uses the Internet in a smart, safe and
positive way.
WHAT IS FAKE NEWS?
Fake news is a catchy term for information that’s false.
There are two main types:
Misinformation: This is when someone shares false information without knowing it’s
wrong. For example, they might see a funny meme and share it, not knowing that the story
behind it was made up.
Disinformation: This is much more fraudulent. It refers to deliberately created false
information meant to mislead, provoke fear, anger or influence beliefs.
Spotting fake news is a key part of digital citizenship. Verifying information before sharing helps
prevent misinformation, protect public trust and maintain a healthier online environment.
Being a responsible digital citizen means verifying sources, checking facts and thinking critically
before sharing content to prevent the spread of misinformation.
As technology continues to advance, which ethical considerations would you prioritise
to ensure these innovations benefit humanity?
