We have learnt about Word and PowerPoint in the previous classes. We know that
Word allows us to create and edit documents, while PowerPoint allows us to create
and edit presentations. In this chapter, we will learn about another important
application program of Microsoft Office Suite, called Excel. Excel is the most commonly
used interactive spreadsheet program that allows us to perform mathematical
calculations, analyse data, and store data in tabular format. We can create charts
from the data and convey more meaningful information. Excel is very important for
those who maintain accounts for sales, bills, or do mathematical calculations, as it is
used to create electronic spreadsheets.
Features of Excel 2016
Excel provides several features that make it the first choice for professionals to
quickly perform lengthy accounting and financial tasks and take immediate decisions.
Some of them are as follows:
Functions and Formulas: Functions are the built-in formulas used for calculating
percentage, interest, average, etc., in Excel. Formulas are used for performing
simple as well as complex calculations.
Formatting Features: Excel allows the use of formatting features to improve the
look of the data.
Auto-Calculation: Data is automatically recalculated in the worksheet if any
change is made in a single cell.
Fast Searching: Fast searching and instant replacing of data.
AutoFill: Entering data in a series using AutoFill feature.
Graphically View Data: Data can be viewed in a graphical form as charts. The
charts help us to understand, analyse and compare data in an effective manner.
The first electronic spreadsheet software was released in 1979.
It was called VisiCalc.
Each dolphin has a unique whistle
(name) just like Excel has a unique
name for each cell.
