Cell Range
A cell range is a collection of two or more cells. It is of two types: Contiguous Cell
Range and Non-Contiguous Cell Range. Contiguous Cell Range is a collection of cells
that are adjacent to or next to one another. A colon (:) is used for specifying this cell
range, for example, A1:A6. Non-contiguous Cell Range is a collection of cells that
are not adjacent to one another. A comma (,) is used for specifying this cell range,
for example, A1, B2, C3.
Workbook
An Excel file is called a workbook. It is a collection of different worksheets. By default,
a workbook contains only one worksheet, Sheet1. The number of worksheets can be
increased as per the requirements.
Worksheet Tab
There can be more than one worksheet in Excel, and each has a specific name. Any
worksheet can be activated by clicking on its tab in the worksheet tab. These tabs are
located at the bottom-left of the Excel window as Sheet1, Sheet2, Sheet3 and so on.
Worksheet Tab Navigation Buttons
Worksheet tab navigation buttons are located on the left side of the worksheet tabs.
These are used to move from one worksheet to another in a workbook.
Status Bar
The horizontal bar at the bottom, which shows various information about the file on
which you are working, is called the Status bar. The right section of the status bar
has view control buttons such as Normal and Page Layout for the spreadsheet.
Types of Data
While working in Excel, the following types of data can be entered:
Numbers: Numbers include the digits (0–9) and their various combinations. All
types of calculations can be done on numbers.
Text: Text includes the collection of letters, numbers, and special characters. No
mathematical calculation can be performed on text.
Date and Time: Date type is used to enter the date in different formats. The default
format of date in Excel is mm/dd/yy. Time type is used to enter time in either
hh:mm or hh:mm:ss format.
