2004 – NASA’s Mars Exploration Mission
NASA's Spirit and Opportunity rovers launched in
2004, used AI for autonomous navigation and image
processing on the Martian surface. These rovers
were equipped with AI systems that allowed them
to operate independently in a harsh, unstructured
environment, exploring Mars and sending back
valuable data. AI played a key role in their ability
to navigate, identify important sites and collect
scientific data demonstrating the utility of AI in space
exploration.
2011 – IBM Watson Wins Jeopardy!
In 2011, IBM Watson made history by defeating two
Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter,
showcasing AI’s ability to handle complex natural
language, puns and vast datasets. Watson's victory
demonstrated AI’s capability in understanding and
processing human language, including the nuances
of wordplay making it a breakthrough in natural
language processing and question-answering systems.
Apple released voice assistant, Siri in 2011. It uses a natural language user interface to infer, observe,
answer and give recommendations to users.
2014 – Amazon Alexa: AI Comes to the Home
In 2014, Amazon introduced Alexa, a voice-controlled
AI assistant alongside the Echo device. Alexa allowed
users to control their smart home devices, play music,
get weather updates and more, all through voice
commands. Alexa’s introduction popularised voice-
controlled AI in homes, marking a significant step in
the integration of AI into everyday life and making it
more accessible to the average consumer.
2016 – AlphaGo Defeats Lee Sedol
In 2016, Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo defeated Lee Sedol,
a world champion in the game of Go, a game much more
complex than chess. AlphaGo's ability to evaluate millions
of potential moves using deep reinforcement learning was
a major leap for AI, demonstrating its ability to master
highly complex strategic tasks. This victory was considered a monumental achievement in AI, as Go
had long been thought too difficult for machines to master.
