As you know in Mathematics, formulas are used to perform calculations, and similarly, Google
Sheets also allows you to perform calculations using formulas. In this chapter, you will explore
how to add formulas to a worksheet in Google Sheets. You will also learn about various built-in
functions that Google Sheets offers to make calculations easier and more efficient.
USING FORMULAS TO PERFORM CALCULATION
In Google Sheets, formulas always start with an equal to (=) sign. When you begin a formula with
an equal sign, Google Sheets understands that you want to perform a calculation. If you forget to
enter the equal sign, Google Sheets will treat your input as text, and the calculation won’t work.
Let’s try a simple exercise to see how formulas work. Start by selecting an empty cell (e.g., A1).
Then type = 5 + 5 and press the Enter key. Google Sheets will calculate the sum and show the
result, 10, in the same cell.
Now, try out some more formulas in other cells to see the results:
1. =8 – 5 (Subtracting 5 from 8)
2. =8 * 5 (Multiplying 8 by 5)
