Optical Character Recognition
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technique to convert an image of text or physical
document into editable form. It is also known as text recognition.
How does OCR work?
Now, let us understand the steps involved in any OCR program:
1. A paper document is read by a scanner and converted into a machine-readable form.
2. The letters, numbers and symbols are examined by OCR. It identifies the patterns,
uppercase and lowercase, etc.
3. At the end, OCR process the characters and converts them into computerised files.
Role of AI in OCR
Before the invention of OCR, converting physical text documents to digital was done
manually. It was a time-consuming process, and several retyping were required to make
it error-free. With OCR, the task has become easy. Once the document is converted into
digital form, editing is easy. With artificial intelligence (AI), handwriting interpretation has
become accurate. AI is playing an important role in the effectiveness of OCR. It ensures
that these documents are converted with the greatest possible accuracy.
