Scenario:
Imagine using our AI skills to explore and discover habitable planets, just like in science fiction
movies. How could AI help analyse astronomical data, predict conditions on other planets or even
simulate ecosystems that could support life on distant worlds?
Let’s try to solve a space-related challenge using the AI Project Cycle. Suppose we want to find an
‘Earth-like exoplanet’.
Finding an Earth-like exoplanet
An exoplanet is any planet located outside our solar system.
Our goal is to identify a planet similar to Earth that exists far away from us.
Some examples of Earth-like exoplanets are Gliese 667Cc and Kepler-69c.

PROBLEM SCOPING
Problem scoping is the first and most important step in the AI project cycle. It involves identifying
a real-world issue that can be addressed using AI. This step requires not only spotting a problem
but also imagining how AI can help solve it. Often, we are surrounded by problems—big or
small—but we may overlook them because they’ve become a normal part of our lives. Problem
scoping encourages us to observe our surroundings carefully and define a clear goal for the
AI solution.
The Problem Scoping phase includes the following steps:
STEP - 1 Identifying the problem: Clearly define the specific issue your AI project is intended
to solve.
STEP - 2 Understanding the context: Study the background, causes and impact of the
problem to gain a complete understanding.
STEP - 3 Defining goals and objectives: Set clear, achievable goals that align with the problem
and guide the AI solution’s direction.
STEP - 4 Identifying stakeholders: Recognise all individuals or groups affected by the problem
or involved in its solution, including those who can contribute valuable insights.
