UNDERSTANDING SEQUENCE
A sequence is simply a list of things that are arranged in a particular order. These
things can be numbers, shapes or even actions. When we talk about a sequence,
SEQUENCE the important thing is that each item in the list follows a pattern or rule.
1 2 3
4 5 6
Let’s understand the sequence with the help of following examples:
Number sequence: If we look at the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10... we can see that each
number is increasing by 2. This pattern makes it a sequence. The rule is that we
add 2 each time to get the next number.
Letter sequence: Look at the letters A, B, C, D, E. These letters are in order. The
rule here is that we go from one letter to the next in the alphabet.
Concepts Used in Sequence
Some of the key concepts used in sequence are as follows:
Order: A sequence must follow a certain order. The order can be increasing or
decreasing.
Pattern: In a sequence, there is always a pattern or rule. For example, adding a
number, subtracting a number or following a list in a certain way.
Predicting: Once you know the rule or pattern, you can predict what comes next
in the sequence.
