Data that is collected and organised helps to understand patterns. These patterns
help you to make information. For example, doctors use data to study diseases, app
developers use data to improve their apps and AI systems use data to make better
decisions.
SOURCES OF DATA
Data doesn’t appear out of nowhere. It is collected from the world around us every
minute of the day. There are three main places where data comes from: sensors
and devices, people and the Internet. Let’s look at each one.
Sensors and Devices
A sensor is a tiny part inside an electronic device that picks up information from the
real world. It detects things such as heat, light, sound or movement and turns them
into data. Sensors are found inside almost every gadget you can think of.
Here are some everyday examples of how sensors collect data:
Temperature: The thermometer sensor inside
an air conditioner reads how warm the room
is. This tells the machine exactly how much
cooling is needed to keep you comfortable.
Movement: A step-counter inside a fitness
band or smartwatch tracks your motion. It
uses this movement data to calculate how
many steps you have taken during the day.
Vision: The camera in a mobile phone captures
light to create photographs and videos. These
images and clips are known as visual data.
Sound: A microphone picks up your voice and
converts the sound waves into audio data.
This allows you to talk to friends on a video call
or record a voice note.
Location: A Global Positioning System (GPS)
chip receives signals from satellites in space
to work out your precise position. This location
data helps you find your way using digital maps.
