Using Pictograms for Data Representation
A pictogram is a visual representation of data using pictures or symbols to convey information.
Each symbol or image in a pictogram represents a certain number of items or units, making it
easier to understand data at a glance. This symbol is also known as key. Great for simple data
sets, as they are fun and easy to use.

The line graph, bar chart and
pie chart were all invented
between 1786 and 1801 by
a Scottish engineer named
William Playfair.
For example, if you were displaying the number of books read by different students in a class, you
might use a picture of a book, where each book symbol represents 5 books read. If one student read
15 books, their row would have 3 book symbols.
Let’s understand this with the help of a scenario.
A survey was conducted among grade 6 students to determine which app or activity they spend
the most time on after completing their homework. The survey results are shown below:
App / Activity Students (Number of Votes)
YouTube 54
Gaming 36
Social media apps 30
Outdoor activity 18
You are tasked with visually representing this data using a pictogram. Each represents
6 students.
