Every day, you see patterns in many things around you. For instance, you may notice that the sun
rises in the east and sets in the west or that your school bus arrives at the same time each day.
If you check your timetable, you’ll see that certain subjects are always taught on the same day.
Recognising these regular patterns helps us organise our day better. For example, if you know
your favourite TV show comes on at 7 PM every evening, you can plan your homework around it.

In this chapter, you will learn how to spot simple patterns in different situations, whether it’s with
                  numbers, objects or activities.

                  PATTERN

A pattern is something that repeats in a regular way. It can be a sequence of numbers, shapes,

sounds or actions that follow a certain order. For example, in a number pattern like 3, 6, 9, 12, the
pattern is adding 3 each time. In nature, patterns can be seen in the way flowers bloom or how
animals migrate. The water cycle follows a repeating pattern of evaporation, condensation and
precipitation. You might also notice patterns in your daily routine, such as waking up, brushing
your teeth and getting ready for school. In architecture, monuments often follow patterns in
their design, like repeating arches or columns, which create a sense of order and balance. These
patterns provide a framework for predicting and understanding behaviours, whether it’s the

movement of the seasons, the structure of buildings or your own daily activities.

                  Importance of Patterns

The following aspects of patterns allow us to navigate the world more effectively:
 Symmetry: Symmetry is a pattern that repeats in a balanced way, making things look orderly.

For example, the wings of a butterfly or the shape of a snowflake demonstrate symmetry. When
something has symmetry, you can fold or divide it in half and both sides will look identical.
Symmetry makes designs more pleasing to the eye and is often used in art and architecture
                     to create harmony.
