Series: A series is a group of items, such as numbers, shapes or events, that are linked together
by a common rule or relationship. In mathematics, a number series can increase or decrease
SIMPLE PATTERN by a fixed amount, like counting by threes (3, 6, 9, 12).
RECOGNITION AND Predictability: When you notice a pattern, you can predict what will come next. Patterns help
us predict what is likely to happen, allowing us to make informed decisions. This could involve
DECISION MAKING identifying the next number in a sequence, such as adding 5 to each number in the series
(5, 10, 15, 20) or anticipating the next event in a cycle, like the next day after Sunday being
Monday. Predictability helps us understand and prepare for what is going to happen next.
Behaviour: Patterns are not just about physical shapes or numbers; they can also relate to
behaviours or actions. These patterns can be visible, such as stripes on a zebra or they can
relate to habits and routines, like waking up at the same time every day or brushing your teeth
after meals. Recognising these behavioural patterns helps us stay organised and manage our
time more effectively.
Patterns in Things We Do Every Day
Some of the patterns we follow in daily life include:
Routines: Waking up, having breakfast and getting
ready for school are part of our daily routines.
These activities are repeated every day, helping
to create a structured start to our mornings.
Schedules: Time patterns such as the cycle of days and
nights, the changing seasons and even weekly or monthly
plans, help structure our lives.
Exercise and hobbies: Many people follow
patterns in their daily activities, such as exercising
in the morning, taking a walk after dinner or
dedicating time to hobbies like reading or playing
a musical instrument.
Travel and commuting: Our daily travel often
follows a set pattern, such as taking the same
route to work or school.
