Time spent on homework or studying
Once data is collected and organised, it becomes easier to study and understand patterns in it.
Structured and Unstructured Data
Data is information that is collected and used to understand patterns, make predictions or gain
insights. It can take many forms such as numbers, text, images or sound. Data can be organised
in different ways, which helps you understand and use it better. There are two main types of data:
structured and unstructured. Let’s explore both types of data:
Structured Data
Structured data is well-organised and follows a clear format. It is usually found in tables or
spreadsheets, making it easy for you to store, search and analyse. Since it follows a defined
pattern, you can quickly organise and access the information.
Examples of structured data include:
A table of student marks
Attendance records
Sales data in a spreadsheet
A school timetable
Results from a science experiment with measured data
A list of books in a library with titles, authors and publication years
Unstructured Data
Unstructured data does not follow a fixed format, which makes it harder to store, organise and
analyse. This data includes many different types such as text, images or audio. Unstructured data
often requires more effort to process and interpret.
