Let’s explore how you can collect data and where it comes from.

œ œObservation: One of the easiest ways to collect data is by observing things around you. You
can gather information simply by watching and counting certain events or activities. For
example: Counting how many students take the school bus to get to school.

œ œSurveys and questionnaires: Another simple method is to ask questions and record the
answers. This is called a survey or questionnaire. You can ask a group of people about
something and collect their responses. For example: You can conduct a survey among your
classmates to find out their favourite sports.

œ œMeasurements: Data can also be collected using tools to measure and record values. These
tools could be something simple like a ruler or thermometer or more advanced devices. For
example: Measuring how much a plant grows each week.

œ œAutomatic device: Many devices automatically collect data, making it easy for you to track
information without doing much. For example, your mobile phone automatically tracks your
step count and screen time. Websites track the number of visits and clicks and smartwatches
                    monitor your heart rate.

                 DATA SOURCES

Now that you know how data can be collected, let’s understand where this data comes from.
Data sources are the places or platforms where data is generated. There are many types of data
sources, both physical and digital. Let’s take a look at some of these sources:

œ œSensors: These are devices that collect real-time data. For example,
fitness trackers collect data on your steps or temperature sensors
                    track the weather.

œ œ Social media: Platforms like Instagram, Facebook or X generate
data based on posts, likes, comments and shares.
