œ œThe extra digits after the decimal point don’t add any real meaning. They simply make the
                    number look more detailed.

This is why it’s important to understand the original data and its precision. Metadata, which is
information about data, often stores details about its precision and accuracy.

                 THINKING LIKE A DATA ANALYST

Imagine you’re tracking your daily study time and you want to see if studying for longer helps you

improve your grades. This is where you can think like a data analyst.

œ œStep 1: Observing carefully: You start by observing how much time you spend studying each
day and the grades you get for your

                    assignments. Date Hours Studied Grade
œ œStep 2: Organising information: Next, Monday 1 hour 70%
you organise the data by creating Tuesday 2 hours 80%
a table. You write down how many Wednesday 1.5 hours 75%

hours you studied and the grades you Thursday 2.5 hours 85%
                    got each day or week.

œ œStep 3: Looking for patterns: You start looking for patterns. For example, when you study for
more hours, your grade seems to be higher. You notice that on days when you studied for at
least 2 hours, your grades were better.
œ œStep 4: Asking questions: You then ask, “Why do my grades improve when I study more?” Is it
because you have more time to review the material? Or maybe because you’re less distracted?

œ œStep 5: Drawing conclusions: Based on your observations, you can draw a conclusion: “The
more I study, the better my grades seem to be.” This is a decision you can make and now you
know that studying more helps you improve!
