PRIVACY IN THE DIGITAL WORLD
In today’s digital age, technology has become an essential part of our daily lives. We use mobile
phones, computers, apps and websites for learning, communication, entertainment, shopping
and many other activities. While these digital tools make our lives easier and more convenient,
they also collect a large amount of personal information. This makes understanding privacy in the
digital world very important.
Think about the apps and websites you use every day. Some
apps ask for your name when you create an account. Others
request access to your location to provide nearby services.
Some apps ask permission to access your photos, contacts,
microphone or camera. At times, we quickly click “Allow”
without thinking carefully. But have you ever wondered why
these apps need this information and how it will be used?
The idea of protecting such personal information is called privacy. Privacy means keeping your
personal information safe and having control over who can see or use it. It ensures that your personal
details are not shared without your permission and are used only for the purpose you agree to.
In today’s digital world, many platforms collect different types of personal data, such as, Name,
Location, Photographs, Health information, Browsing history and Contact details.
This information may seem harmless at first, but if it is misused or accessed by the wrong people,
it can lead to serious problems. For example, someone might use your personal details to create
fake accounts, steal your identity or misuse your photographs. In some cases, personal information
can also be used for financial fraud, such as accessing bank accounts or making unauthorised
transactions. It may even damage a person’s reputation if incorrect or private information is
shared publicly.
That is why it is important to think carefully before sharing personal information online. Being
aware and cautious helps protect your digital identity and keeps you safe.
Before sharing your data online, it is helpful to ask yourself a few important questions:
Why is this information needed? Who will be able to see it?
How long will it be stored? Can I delete it later?
These questions help you make better decisions and understand whether sharing your information
is necessary or not. Developing good digital habits is one of the best ways to protect your privacy.
For example, you should never share sensitive information such as OTPs, bank details, passwords
or personal identification numbers (PINs) with anyone. Even trusted-looking messages or calls
should be verified before sharing any details.
It is also important to remember that privacy is not about hiding from others. Instead, privacy is
about having control over your personal information and deciding what you want to share and
what you want to keep private.
