VISUAL PATTERNS IN DESIGNS
Visual patterns in designs and layouts are repeating shapes, lines or colours that
create a sense of order. These patterns are generally found in tiled floors, wallpapers,
clothing and building decorations. Designers use patterns to make things look
interesting and balanced.
To recognise a pattern in a design or layout, look carefully at how shapes or
colours are arranged. Ask yourself: What repeats? How often does it repeat?
Can I guess what comes next? For example, a floor might have tiles arranged like
square–triangle–square–triangle. That’s a repeating pattern.
Patterns can go in straight lines, circles or even zigzags. They help guide our eyes and
make designs easier to understand and more beautiful. In buildings, patterns might be
used in windows, bricks or fences. In graphic designs, they help organise information.
