Technologies such as Quantum Computing, 5G and Blockchain are driving change across
industries. In this chapter, you will explore these emerging technologies.

INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

The Internet of Things or IoT, is a system that connects everyday objects to the Internet. These
objects can send and receive data, making them smart. IoT can be described as a network of
physical devices that communicate with each other automatically, without human involvement.
This can include anything from your smartwatch to smart fridges and even entire smart cities.

The first IoT device was a Coca
Cola machine at Carnegie Mellon
in the 1980s.

HOW DOES IOT WORK?

IoT works by connecting devices to the Internet, allowing them to collect and share data. Sensors on
these devices detect changes in the environment and the data is sent to the cloud for processing.
Based on this data, actions are taken, like adjusting settings or triggering events, making everyday

tasks more automated and efficient.

EVERYDAY EXAMPLES OF IOT

Some of the IoT devices you use or see in your daily life include:

Smart homes: IoT controls devices like lights, fridges and security systems with smart
speakers, managing them through voice commands. Cameras and motion detectors
enhance safety.
