Identity is the combination of a person’s qualities, beliefs and characteristics that

make them unique, shaping how they see themselves and how others recognise
them. A digital identity is the online version of you, represented through your profile,
made up of the things you share, the websites you visit and how you behave on the

Internet. In this chapter, you will learn about your digital identity, how to keep it safe
and make good choices while using the Internet.

Let us explore the story of Meera, how she learns to protect her digital identity

online.
Meera is a class 4 student, studying in a school in Chennai. One day she gets a friend

request on Instagram on her mom’s phone from someone named “Anu Cute.” The
profile photo shows a girl with a puppy. “Anu” says, “Hi Riya! I am in your school.”

Riya checks the profile image only 2 images: one of mountains and another one of
a busy market. There are no real family photos, no school name and no images of
any of Meera’s school friends.
