FAKE PRIZE GIVEAWAY
Rahul received a message on a social media app claiming he had won a brand new
smartphone worth thousands of rupees. The message included a link that asked him
to fill in his full name, phone number, address and bank details to confirm delivery.
The message also had a countdown timer that said the prize offer would expire in 10
minutes, creating pressure to respond quickly.
Rahul checked the sender’s profile and noticed it had no real posts, no followers
and a strange username. The website link in the message was not the official site
of the smartphone company. When Rahul showed the message to his older sister,
she warned him that scammers often use fake prize offers to collect personal and
banking information. Rahul deleted the message and reported the account on the
platform.
