RISKS OF OVERSHARING ONLINE
Oversharing online refers to posting more personal information than necessary,
which can expose you to various risks. While sharing is a natural part of social
media and communication, it’s important to recognise the potential dangers of
revealing too much.
Before you post anything, always ask yourself:
Would I like
my teacher or
Does this post show grandparents to
personal information see this?
like my school, address
or phone number?
Would I be okay if a
stranger saw this?
Some risks of oversharing online include:
Sharing personal details, such as your full name, birthdate and address, can
make it easier for hackers to steal your identity.
Posting your location or daily activities, especially when you’re away, can alert
criminals or burglars to target your home.
Oversharing can make you a target for online stalkers or harassers, leading to
unwanted attention.
Once information is shared online, it may be saved, shared or archived by
others, making it difficult to remove completely.
