CREATING A SAFE DIGITAL STUDY GROUP

Arun is 11 years old. With his four classmates, he creates a private WhatsApp group where they share:
Short notes after class Questions they found difficult

Links to educational videos or animations Mini quizzes they prepare for one another
One day, one student in the group is absent. Through the group, classmates send him their notes
and a brief voice explanation of what was taught. Arun also records an explanation video and
shares it in the group. Due to this, the absent student doesn’t fall behind.

Based on the above case, answer the following questions:

                  1. What steps did Arun and his friends take to make their digital study group safe?

                  2. If you were in Arun’s class, what would you do to make the group even safer or better?

The Golden Rule: Protect Your Private Information
Think of your private information like your most valuable possessions. You wouldn't leave your
favourite bicycle unlocked on the street, would you? In the same way, you must look after your

personal details in the digital world.
For example: Imagine a Class 6 student named Sumit, who is from

Mumbai. Sumit loves Roblox (online game). One day, a person in
the game chat (who Sumit thinks is another student) says, "Hey,
what’s your real name and what school do you go to? Let us meet
                 up and play later!"
Sumit thinks the online person is just being friendly and shares

his first name and school name. The scammer then searches for
Sumit’s school online and finds its address. He then sends Sumit a
message saying, “I know where you live. I am coming to your school tomorrow.”

“The scammer did not actually know Sumit, but he tricked him
into sharing just enough private information (name + school) to create a
                                                               fear-filled situation.

Online friends should only be people you already know and trust in the
real world (like classmates or cousins). Do not share any private information

                                                             with online strangers.”

Our Digital World – Staying Safe Online 11
