TRAPPED BY A FAKE WI-FI NETWORK
Prateek was at Bengaluru Airport with his cousins, waiting for their flight. He opened his laptop
to watch videos and finish a school assignment. He saw a Wi-Fi network named Free_Airport_
WiFi_123 and clicked Connect immediately. He did not ask his parents and did not check whether
the network was official.
When the Wi-Fi felt slow, Prateek turned on Auto-Connect so the laptop would automatically join
any other available network. Soon, a pop-up appeared asking him to “verify his identity” by logging
into his email and school account. Without thinking, he entered his username and password.
A few minutes later, a warning appeared on his screen:
Unusual login detected from another location.
His email and school portal logged him out. When he restarted the laptop, nothing changed. Someone
at the airport had used the open network and fake pop-up to steal his login information.
