Spotting the Danger Signs
When you are online, it’s important to know when something doesn’t feel right. Cyber groomers
and bullies often try to trick you and early warning signs can keep you safe. Some key danger
signs to watch out for:
Uncomfortable conversations: Sometimes, a person online may ask questions or start a chat
that makes you feel uneasy. If a conversation feels strange, inappropriate or worries you, trust
your feelings. You don’t have to reply and you should tell a trusted adult immediately.
Requests for private images or videos: A serious danger sign is when someone asks for
private photos or videos of you. No one has the right to ask for these, even if they claim to be
your friend. Sharing such images can be very unsafe and may be used to harm or blackmail
you.
Sudden friend requests from strangers: If a stranger suddenly sends you a friend request or
follows you online, be careful. Cyber groomers often pretend to be someone friendly or similar
to you. Don’t accept requests from people you don’t know in real life and avoid chatting with
them.
Pressure to keep secrets: Groomers often ask children to keep conversations or online
activities secret. If someone tells you not to tell your parents, teachers or friends, this is a red
flag. Secrets like this are unsafe.
