can sometimes sound harsher than we intend. By reading
carefully, using clear language and avoiding rumours or fake
information, we can prevent arguments and confusion.
It encourages responsible digital citizens: When we act respectfully online, we show that we
understand our responsibilities as digital citizens. This includes following rules, giving credit for
others’ work and using technology in a positive way.

UNDERSTANDING NETIQUETTE
Imagine you are visiting a new school. You wouldn’t shout in the classroom, push your friends or
take someone else’s things, right? Just like in real life, the online world has rules too. These rules
are called netiquette.
Netiquette is a combination of the words network and etiquette, which means good manners
online. Just like we have rules for being polite and respectful in real life, we also need rules for
communicating on the Internet. Good netiquette involves following rules and being polite online,
while bad netiquette includes rude or irresponsible behaviour that can hurt others or create
problems. Some important examples include:
