THE CONSEQUENCES OF IGNORING BACKUPS Skills
Ishaan, the tech-savvy helper of his class, was given the responsibility of creating digital projects
for the upcoming inter school science fair. He worked enthusiastically for three weeks and designed
an interactive 35 slide presentation filled with colourful animations, charts and creative layouts.
Confident that everything was safe on his laptop, he told himself, “I’ll take a backup later.”
One evening, a notification appeared on his screen:
“New software update available.”
Not wanting to interrupt his work or restart the laptop, Ishaan clicked “Later.”
Over the next week, his laptop began to slow down and strange pop ups kept appearing.
While searching online for a final “science template,” Ishaan clicked a link on an unfamiliar website
called FreeThemes4U. He downloaded a file named Science Design Final.zip. Moments later, when
he tried to open his project folder, several files displayed the message:
“File cannot be opened. The file is damaged or corrupted.”
Alarmed, Ishaan called his father for help. After checking the laptop, his father explained that the
downloaded file likely contained a virus. With the antivirus expired and the firewall turned off during
gaming, the virus had easily entered the system and damaged his project files.
The next day at school, his teacher asked gently,
“Did you take a backup? On the cloud or a pen drive?”
Ishaan could only shake his head. Three weeks of hard work had vanished.
