Self-Image
Self-image refers to how an individual perceives themselves,
both physically and emotionally. It is the mental picture of
one’s appearance, personality and abilities, which influences
how they interact with others and the world around
them. Various factors, including personal experiences,
relationships, social influences and media, contribute to
shaping self-image.
A positive self-image involves feeling good about one’s
appearance and abilities, accepting both strengths and
weaknesses and being confident in one’s unique qualities.
On the other hand, a negative self-image can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction, insecurity and
discomfort with how one is perceived.
Self-image can change over time, depending on life experiences, achievements and interactions
with others. It is not fixed and can improve with self-awareness and conscious effort. Building a
positive self-image focuses on self-acceptance, practising mindfulness and surrounding oneself
with positive influences and supportive environments.
Self-Esteem
Self-esteem refers to how much value or respects an
individual places on themselves. It is the overall feeling
of worth that a person has, which influences how they
approach life’s challenges, relationships and their own
personal goals. Self-esteem is not just about feeling
confident; it is about believing that one deserves
happiness, success and respect.
People with high self-esteem tend to have a positive
outlook on life and feel empowered to take on new challenges. They accept their imperfections
and embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. On the other hand, low self-esteem can lead
to feelings of unworthiness, self-criticism and fear of failure. Individuals with low self-esteem
may struggle with self-doubt and may not pursue opportunities because they feel they are not
capable.
Self-esteem develops over time and can be influenced by experiences, achievements and the
way others treat us. It is also shaped by the internal dialogue one has with themselves. Building
strong self-esteem involves cultivating self-respect, recognising achievements and maintaining
healthy boundaries. It requires nurturing a positive internal environment, where self-compassion
and kindness are given equal importance to personal growth.
