Real Life Incidents of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is not just something seen on the news; it can happen to anyone. It can affect
students, teenagers and even adults. Read the following real-life stories to understand how
cyberbullying can have a strong impact on a person’s feelings, confidence and safety.
1. Young woman ends life following repeated cyberbullying from former friend (2023)
A young woman from Kerala named Athira faced constant bullying on the Internet from a
former friend. Even after their friendship ended, he kept sharing her photos and private chats
online to embarrass her. This made her feel very sad, scared and stressed, especially because
her family had started getting marriage proposals for her. Athira complained to the police,
but the bullying continued. Feeling unable to handle the pressure and humiliation, she took her
own life. The man who harassed her has now been charged by the police for cyberbullying and
for encouraging her to harm herself.

2. Cyberbullying complaint filed after Oxford student faces harassment over old posts (2021)
A 22-year-old Indian student named Rashmi Samant was elected as the student union
president at Oxford University in the UK. Soon after her election, some old social media posts
were shared online and people began accusing her of racism. Many users started bullying her
on the Internet and sending hurtful messages.
