Trickery
Trickery is when someone gains another person’s
trust online and then uses it to hurt, embarrass or
take advantage of them. The person pretending to
be friendly usually asks for secrets, personal photos
or private information and then misuses it.
Let’s understand this with the help of the given
scenario:
Arjun made a new friend while playing an online
game. The friend slowly started asking Arjun for personal photos by saying it was just for fun. After
Arjun shared one photo, the friend threatened to post it everywhere unless Arjun sent more. Arjun
became scared and didn’t know how to stop it. He realised the person was never a real friend, but
someone who tricked him to cause harm.
Trolling
Trolling is when someone intentionally posts rude, offensive
or provoking comments online just to upset others or start
arguments. The troll does this for attention or to cause
drama, not because of a real problem.
Let’s understand this with the help of the given scenario:
Diya posted a video of her singing on a school talent page.
A stranger kept commenting that her voice was awful and
that she should never sing again. Even when other students
supported Diya, the same person replied with laughing
emojis and tried to start arguments with everyone. The comments had no real purpose except to
upset people. Diya felt hurt and stopped posting her videos for a while.
Catfishing
Catfishing is when someone pretends to be someone else
online by using fake pictures, names or information to trick
others. The person doing the catfishing usually tries to build a
relationship with someone, gain their trust or take advantage
of them in some way.
Catfishing is different from a fake profile. Even though they
might look the same, the main difference is in the intent. A
fake profile might just be someone using false information to stay anonymous or for cyberbullying.
However, catfishing is done with the purpose of deceiving someone to form a relationship or to
gain something from them.
