                     What  to do: Always verify unusual requests,  even if they  appear  to  be  from

                  2.  IIT Roorkee's Massive Data Leak Reveals Students' Private Information
                       More than 30,000  students’  and alumni’s  private  information,  including  contact  details,

                     financial records, and photos, was made public by a significant data breach at IIT Roorkee.
                     Before the hack was found, the data  was available  to  the public  for  years, which raised
                     questions about data protection in educational institutions.

                     What  to do: Student  information  should  be  safeguarded,  as  it  is  important
                     information and must needs to be stored securely.
                  3.  Identity Theft of a Student for Financial Gain

                       Neha Tripathi, a 20-year-old student at Lucknow University, got a call from a person posing
                     as her uncle’s friend and identifying  himself as the District  Magistrate.  She was asked  to
                     transfer `90,000 immediately for “furniture delivery” by the caller. Trusting the caller, she
                     immediately transferred the money online. However, she found out later that her uncle was
                     not aware of the request and it was a hoax.

                     What to do: Never trust anyone blindly. Always verify the information given to
                     you. Neha immediately called the National Cybercrime helpline (1930), visited the Cyber Cell
                     to file a formal complaint, and froze her bank account. Because of her quick action, she was
                     able to recover `41,000.

                  4.  College Admissions are Disrupted by an IT Firm Breach

                       Between mid- and late-June, the server of Surya Shakti Infotech Pvt Ltd, an IT company in
                     Kolkata that handles college admissions data, was hacked. In order to cause confusion and
                     financial risk, hackers gained  access  to  admission databases,  including  those  of Scottish
                     Church College, and emailed applicants fake payment instructions.
                       Applicants  were deceived, important  records were lost or stolen, and admissions  were
                     interfered with. The business had to set up a new server in order to resume admissions after

                     the cyber crime police filed a case.

                     What to do: Student information should be kept confidential at all times. It is
