As technology becomes a part of our daily lives, the line between the real world and the digital
world is becoming increasingly thin. Students today use smartphones, computers, and the Internet
for learning, communication, entertainment, and creativity. With so much time spent online, it is

important to understand how to behave in ways that keep us safe and supports a positive digital
environment. This chapter introduces the idea of digital citizenship, a concept that teaches us
how to use technology wisely and responsibly.

                  DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

“Read the story of Riya, a class 8 student.”

Riya begins her day by using WhatsApp to check in with her classmates. She considers forwarding
a humorous meme about a classmate that she found online. She then recalls the advice given by
her teacher: “Would this be said on the person’s face? If not, it should not be posted or forwarded
online.” Instead of sharing the meme, Riya deleted it.
