2. Informational Signage: These refers to the total amenities.
These signs provide users with the general information they
need when navigating. Examples:
l Indications of bathroom locations.
l Building addresses.
l Directions to elevators and stairs.
l Information about amenities like WIFI, etc.
3. Directional Signage: Directional signage helps individuals
get to their destination. It’s like an invisible hand guiding
people from their current location to their destination, one
step at a time. They’re best employed in intersections and
in regions with no obvious traffic flow. Examples:
l Plaques on walls at junctions indicate which way to turn.
l A building directory indicating which floor each office is on.
l Physical separation and spacing markers.
l Coloured lines or footsteps on the floor for us to trace.
4. Regulatory Signage: Regulatory signage is a proactive
method of navigating. It focuses on safety and liability
problems and establishes guidelines for what is and isn’t
acceptable in your facilities. It creates and enforces rules,
safety standards, and privacy obligations. Examples:
l No pets allowed.
l No smoking.
l Caution! High Voltage!
l Physical distancing rules and requirements.
Data Visualisation vs. Information Design
Both are similar so there is a need to understand the difference between the two. Data visualisation focuses
on presenting facts and figures clearly. It’s like providing raw materials for understanding. Think of charts,
graphs, or maps in textbooks.
Information design goes a step further. It takes data and organises it to solve a problem or guide a user. It’s
about presenting information in a way that helps people do something, like following a recipe or assembling
furniture.
Essentially, data visualisation is about showing information, while information design is about using that
information to achieve a goal.
