Use a mobile app of your choice (e.g., a social media or utility app) to explore its interface, identify
any usability issues, and analyse its design elements. Consider the following in your research:
1. Explore Navigation
T l Use the app to perform different tasks (e.g., posting, messaging, searching) and note any
A
S issues you encounter with navigation.
K
l Identify parts of the navigation that feel smooth versus those that are confusing or challenging.
1
2. Examine the Basic Interface
l Identify the primary interface elements, like icons, menus, and buttons.
l Analyse if these elements are easy to locate and understand at a glance.
3. Assess Reversibility of Actions
l Test how easy it is to undo actions (e.g., deleting or editing content).
l Identify if there are clear options for cancelling or going back from a step.
4. Identify Unused Elements
l Note any features or buttons you don’t typically use while interacting with the app.
l Consider why you might not use these elements and if they add unnecessary complexity.
5. Clarify Unfamiliar Elements
l Identify any icons or buttons you did not initially understand and had to explore or look up.
l Note how these elements could be made clearer or more intuitive.
Also keep in mind the following:
l Quantitative Findings: Note any numerical data, such as the number of confusing elements,
average time to complete a task, or frequency of mistakes.
l Qualitative Findings: Describe any recurring patterns in usability issues, common points of
frustration, and suggestions for improvements.
l Analysis of the App Interface: Summarise the overall usability, highlight strengths and
weaknesses, and provide recommendations to enhance user experience. You can present all your
findings in a PPT.
User Centred Design
User-centred design (UCD) focuses on making products that truly meet users’ needs, providing value at every
step of the design process. This approach places the user experience at the heart of design, ensuring that
products are intuitive, engaging, and accessible to a wide audience.
