Understanding Game Components and Structure
Games are structured experiences designed to engage players through challenges, choices, and outcomes.
According to the “Elemental Tetrad” model by Jesse Schell, American video game designer, a well-designed
game comprises four core elements:
More Visible
Aesthetics
Mechanics
The visual and
sensory appeal, The rules and

Story Technology

Less Visible
For example, in the game Carrom, aesthetics includes the polished
board and smooth pieces; mechanics involve flicking the striker
to pocket coins; the story lies in the sequence of turns; and the
technology is the physical board and coins. No one element is more
significant than the others; they all have an equal impact on the
entire experience that the game aims to provide.
The 4Cs of Game Design
Games are not just about play—they are structured experiences designed to engage players at multiple
levels. At their core, games revolve around the “4Cs” that define their essence and create a captivating
experience:

Chance
1. Challenge: Every game presents a problem or goal for players to solve or achieve, making the gameplay
purposeful and rewarding. For instance, the objective in Chess is to strategically outsmart the opponent
to achieve checkmate.
