Dr. Harish Hande, co-founder of SELCO India, is a
renewable energy innovator who used design thinking to
bring solar power to underserved communities. Realizing
that technology alone wasn’t enough, he focused on
understanding the real needs and financial limits of rural users.
SELCO created affordable, customized solar lighting solutions
for homes, schools, and small businesses, often with micro-
finance support. His user-centered approach empowered
people—from street vendors to farmers—with clean energy
access. Dr. Hande’s work has improved lives in over half a
million households. In recognition of his impact, he received
the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2011 for his contribution to
social entrepreneurship and sustainable development.
