Example: The Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh was designed using circular patterns. The circular grid
represents the idea of time, life cycles, and the cosmic wheel (chakra). When you walk around the stupa, it’s
like walking through the cycle of life—birth, life, death, and rebirth.
These circular grids are deeply meaningful and help create a spiritual journey for the person moving through
the space.
Star Grids – Used in Islamic Architecture
In Islamic art, living beings are not usually shown, so artists used geometry to express ideas. One beautiful
method was using star-shaped grids, which are made by dividing a circle into equal parts and connecting
the dots to create intricate patterns.
Example: In Islamic architecture, such as in the ceilings, tiles, and lattice screens (jalis) of mosques, 8-pointed
or 10-pointed stars are created by repeating and connecting shapes like triangles and hexagons. These
patterns symbolized infinity, divine beauty, and unity in diversity.
