• Emotion: A pose can show peace, joy, or action without words.
• Connection: Viewers relate better to designs that look and move like real people.
This approach also reminds us that design isn’t only about straight lines and shapes—it’s about life, expression,
and feeling.
Reflection - The Final Step
In Indian design, the last step is reflection—asking if the final design communicates the original abstract idea.
Designers reflect on questions like:
• Does this shape express the intended story?
• Are the metaphors and symbols consistent?
• Does the form feel balanced and meaningful?
For example, in designing a temple, a designer starts with the idea of cosmic order, maps it to the human
body, plans it using grids, and details it with fractals. The reflection checks if the whole temple still expresses
cosmic order.
As you have understood from this chapter, the process begins with an abstract idea—creating a small model
of the universe on Earth. This idea is first shared through stories. To make it easier to understand, the idea is
turned into metaphors using different elements. Basic shapes like squares and circles are given meanings
based on their form and qualities. Various elements are also linked to parts of the human body, such as
the head, feet, and navel. After this, the relationships and order among these elements are established to
form the basic structure. Frameworks like grids and the Talamana System are used to maintain balance and
consistency in the design. In the final stage, details of the temple structure are developed using methods like
parametrization, where simple steps are repeated to create complex and refined outcomes.
