Final Capstone Project 21 st Lab Activity
Century #Critical Thinking
Identify a Problem to Solve Skills #Communication
The student needs to identify a problem to solve. This needs to be done with care, as this design
project will span 4 months, and it is not prudent to change the project halfway through.
Along with identifying the problem, the following requirements should be considered:
• User Group
• Subject Area
• Environment or Space
Students may refer to the different fields and issues discussed in previous grades/modules and make a list. These can
be categorized based on priority and a relevant problem can be selected.
Depending on the chosen problem area, the project could involve any of these design fields:
• Communication Design
• Product Design
• Animation Design
• Film Design
• Digital Design
The Problem to Solve
• The problem should be selected by the student in consultation with the teacher.
• Since the project will run for four months, the problem selected should allow depth and breadth in exploration
and solution development.
• The design process will include:
o Research
o Understanding user needs
o Analyzing requirements
o Ideating alternate solutions
o Finalizing and building prototypes
o Getting user feedback
o Formulating a business plan
o Making a final presentation where students justify their solution
All stages of the design process as well as the final solution must be documented in a report.
Teamwork Guidelines
Students can work individually or in groups of two. If working in groups:
• They must collaborate and cooperate effectively.
• They should share the workload and function as partner team members throughout the project.
• Clear roles should be defined for each team member in solving the problem.
