Upcycling Old School Uniforms into Useful Products
1. Identifying a Problem
Many students discard their old school uniforms at the end of the academic year. These uniforms are often
still in usable condition but are no longer worn due to changes in size, wear and tear, or updated school dress
codes. Disposing of them contributes to fabric waste and environmental damage. This project addresses the
problem by finding sustainable ways to upcycle these uniforms into useful items such as pouches, bags, or
notebook covers.
User Group: School students and their families
Subject Area: Sustainability, Fashion Design, Recycling
Environment/Space: School and home
This is a practical and eco-friendly solution that reduces textile waste while promoting creative reuse.
Problem Statement
How to creatively reuse old school uniforms and turn them into useful everyday products instead of throwing
them away?
2. Research and Exploration
Primary Research:
• Interviews with students, parents, and teachers to understand how they currently dispose of old uniforms.
• Observation of school lost-and-found bins or donation practices.
Examples:
• Student 1: “I throw away old uniforms because I outgrow them.”
• Parent: “We donate some clothes but uniforms usually go to waste.”
• Teacher: “Students often leave extra uniforms in the lost-and-found box.”
