2. Shapes: Geometric patterns involve repeated shapes, lines, or angles.
Examples: • A triangle followed by a square, then a triangle, and so on. (∆, □, ∆, □, ∆, □)
• Patterns in tiling (see figure (i)).
• Symmetric patterns in a butterfly’s wings
(see figure (ii)).
• Rotational patterns in designs like flower

3. Colours and Objects: Such patterns are often seen in daily life, like in the arrangement of colours in a
design or objects in a repeating order.
Examples: blue, red, blue, red, blue, red …... (figure below)
Types of Patterns
Various kinds of patterns can be observed around us. Here we will discuss a few:
1. Repeating Patterns: A set of numbers, shapes, or objects that repeat over and over in the same order.
Example: ∆, □, ∆, □, ∆, □ (triangle, square, triangle, square, triangle, square)
2. Growing Patterns: These patterns increase or decrease following a specific rule.
Example: Figure showing the growing pattern of plants.
Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ... (each number increases by 2).
3. Symmetric Patterns: Patterns can show symmetry, meaning
one side of a shape or design is a mirror image of the other.
Examples: A butterfly’s wings show a symmetric pattern; The petals of a rose and many other flowers
are symmetrical.
1.3 NUMBER PATTERNS AND THEIR GEOMETRIC PRESENTATION
The basics of patterns in whole numbers begin with shapes made of dots. We arrange dots in some elementary
shapes to find number patterns. For arranging dots, we generally take geometrical shapes like – a line, rectangle,
square, triangle, etc.
Line
Every whole number except 0 can be arranged as a line using the dots. For example:
