7.3 TYPES OF FRACTIONS
Proper Fractions
A fraction in which the numerator is smaller than the denominator is called a proper fraction. Proper fractions
are less than 1. On the number line, they always lie between 0 and 1.
5 4
For example: , , 7 , 18 , … etc. are proper fractions.
8 9 13 29
Improper Fractions
A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator is called an improper fraction. Improper
fractions are greater than 1. On the number line, they lie to the right of 1.
5 10 14 19
For example: , , , , … etc. are improper fractions.
3 7 5 4
Mixed Fractions
A mixed fraction is a combination of two parts: (i) a whole number part (ii) a proper fraction part.
2 2
For example: 2 , where 2 is the whole number part and is the proper fraction part. It is read as ‘2 and 2
7 7
by 7 or 2 is to 2 by 7’.
We see that a mixed fraction is made up of two parts– a whole number and a proper fraction, that’s why it is
called a mixed fraction (or mixed number). They are always greater than their whole number part, so they
always lie to the right of their whole number part on the number line.
