Activity 1: ‘Ink Blot Devils’

It’s a fun filled artistic activity. Take a piece of paper and fold it in half. Open the paper and spill a few drops
of ink (or paint) on one half.
Now press the halves together and then unfold the paper again. Try answering the following questions:

• What do you see?
• Is the resulting figure symmetric?
• If yes, where is the line of symmetry?
• Is there any other line along which it can be folded to produce
two identical parts?
• Try making more such patterns.
Discuss your observations with your classmates.
Activity 2: ‘Paper Folding and Cutting’

This activity will make you learn a fun-filled method of making symmetric shapes.
1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half.
2. Make a cut along the dotted lines as shown in the adjoining
figure and answer the following questions:
• Draw a sketch of how the paper will look when unfolded.
• Now unfold the paper and check if your sketch and the
actual shape match or not.
• Is the shape symmetric?
• Do you see a line of symmetry in this figure? What is it?
Now make symmetric shapes by folding and cutting as instructed in the following two figures. Also, answer
the above questions and discuss your results with your teacher and classmates.
